Meet Tina Cauthorn, Artist and Etsy Seller

Tina Cauthorn is a retired buyer from Fred Meyer, a division of Kroger. She has put her creative skills to work by having fun with buttons. Her "Button Factory" is in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Tina buys all her buttons on Etsy, on eBay, and at antique stores. So many Buttons, so little time! Check out Tina's button frames and other creations by visiting her Etsy shop at https://www.etsy.com/shop/allbuttonedupbytina.

1. How did you decide to focus on making and selling button frames in your Etsy shop?

I saw a button frame in an antique shop and I thought, "I can do that." I went home and found an old picture frame and started gluing buttons on it. I still have my first "creation," and when I look at it, I realize how far I have come. Once I made enough to give away frames as gifts to friends and family, I decided that I should try selling them. I initially did a few craft shows. Boy, is that hard work! Everyone at the craft events was talking about Etsy. I looked into it and figured I would give it a try! My product seems to find the right customer base on Etsy.

2. What do you especially like about working with buttons--and how do you choose the buttons to work with in your creations?

When I worked as a buyer, I did a lot of design work, and this was a great way to challenge my creative side. One of the things I did as a buyer was buy "Novelty Underwear." All those boxer shorts with hearts on them for Valentines Day? I kind of took that idea and transferred it into button frames. It's fun to think of ideas. Holidays were easy! But then, I thought "Minions." What about "Wine," "Weddings," and "Watermelons"? I love that my customers send me a request for something special, and I'm able to make it happen.

3. In searching for buttons online and offline, how do you distinguish antique buttons from more contemporary ones?

When I started binging on buttons, I bought a lot of buttons on eBay--by the POUND! I got all kinds of old, vintage buttons. Since then, I've gotten very discriminating in only picking buttons that I know will complement what I already have. I've had to add new, current buttons into my assortment. It's tough to find nice, vintage rhinestone buttons or vintage button in bright, vibrant colors.

4. You have some great reviews on Etsy! What has been your experience in selling on the Etsy platform?

I've always said that Etsy is really a fabulous community. I find almost everyone I've dealt with has been a pleasure. I use my many years in retail to set my standards for my shop. "The customer is always right," and I want to make sure its a pleasant experience. I know I love it when I get a package from Etsy and its nicely wrapped and presented. I've had a lot of the sellers I buy from become regular customers. It's a nice world.

5. What is your advice to others who want to start selling arts and crafts projects online?

I think if you want to start selling online, you need to do your research. What is out there? What is the pricing? Does it compare with what you do? I know my first frames were not as nice as they are now. I did not start selling on Etsy until I had it perfected. So, make sure you are putting your best foot forward. You won't get repeat customers if things are not well put together and presented nicely. Think about how you like to receive things. Be patient. It took me awhile to sell my first frame, but now my sales are pretty steady: steady enough for me to say I am an "artist," even if the medium is glue and buttons!

Thanks, Tina!

Meet Daniela VillaRamos of Once Upon a Vow

Daniela VillaRamos founded Once Upon a Vow in 2014, leaving her career in non-profit grantwriting, fundraising, and report-writing. She had written toasts and speeches for friends over the years, and she decided to start a new career which allowed her to focus on her love of writing--and of love. For a better idea of Daniela's work, check out some samples of her wedding vows and wedding toasts and speeches.

1. What inspired you to start Once Upon a Vow?

When I got married in November 2008, I was at the altar listening to my husband's not-so-put-together vows, and I thought to myself: “Hmm, I probably should've helped him edit those lovey dovey, unorganized words." For me, writing my vows was easy, but that's not the case for everybody. There's just too many emotions, too much history, and way too many thoughts running through your mind, like HOW IN THE WORLD are you going to express to your other half everything you feel in just the few short minutes it takes to say your vows?

Couples who want to write their own vows choose to because traditional vows don't fully encompass their quirks, their one-of-a-kind love, or their unique promises to each other for their marriage. Vows have evolved from "richer or poorer" to include everyday promises like "I will admit when you're right and let you forget when you're wrong." Because, let's be honest, it's the day to day moments that make up a marriage along with the big life-changing events.

At first, most couples are filled with excitement to make these promises, but as time passes some find it challenging to articulate. What was once a beautiful idea has turned into this huge ordeal and the closer the date approaches, the stronger the whirlwind of stress comes with it. There are countless things couples agonize over when planning their wedding: the music, the food, the unwanted family drama, and the list goes on and on. Expressing your love and devotion shouldn't be on that list.

That's why I started Once Upon A Vow, to express love when it's challenging to find the right words.

2. Would you tell us a little bit about your collaborative process and how you work with couples to write words that "sound like them"?

Whether couples need help writing their vows, fine-tuning their drafted speech, or creating a wedding ceremony script from scratch, the collaborative process is the same. We chat, I write, they review, and I'll revise until they're so flippin' happy with the finished product that they can't wait for the big day! More specifically, I speak with couples for about an hour to gain some insight about themselves, their relationship, and the promises that matter most to them so that I can express their heartfelt feelings. Our conversation is recorded, when permitted, and I take notes throughout so I can capture their stories, quirks, and adorable nuances in the way they speak. Through a series of pointed questions, our intimate conversation helps reveal their innermost thoughts, transforming them into touching vows to be remembered throughout their marriage--in good times and in bad.

3. In addition to wedding vows, what are other writing activities you help out with for weddings?

Aside from writing wedding vows, I help couples craft the pages of their wedding website, create a unique ceremony, and write their thank you speech. I can also become their own personal wedding journalist where I write about the details of their wedding day. But couples aren't the only ones that need a little extra help during the wedding. I also help the important members of the wedding party, like the Parents, Best Man, and Maid of Honor, draft their speeches and toasts so they can confidently articulate their love and well-wishes.

4. Do you have some general ideas or templates that you share with couples as a starting point for vows?

Definitely. Vows come in all lengths and phrases. Some couples want to say their vows in tandem, while others want to take turns sharing their vows. Couples usually come to me when they don't know where to start so besides showing them my own work, I share my Love Inspired Vow Pinterest boards that have a mix of epic love quotes, song lyrics, and real vows to get an idea of what they'd like to say on the day.

5. What is your best advice for couples to create a wedding that fits the uniqueness of their relationship?

My best advice for couples is to follow the beat of their own drum. Don’t let yourselves be bullied by your families, friends, or the do's and don'ts typically found in wedding articles. The LGBT community has been revamping traditional ceremonies to highlight their personalities and love stories and I think all couples should do the same. There's no reason to try to fit into this non-existent, uniform, wedded box that couples unfortunately feel they must fit into. If you feel like having a short 20 minute ceremony with a ring blessing, a painting ceremony, and a reading of some epic Queen lyrics with an exit song of "We are the Champions," then go for it! This is the time to embrace every quirky bit of your personalities and your story in order to truly make it your day extraordinary!

Thanks, Daniela!

Meet Adam Schneider, Certified Sommelier and CEO of Say It On Wine

Adam Schneider is a Certified Sommelier living and working in the heart of Napa Valley. His business, Say It On Wine, offers a unique, personalized, affordable gift for any occasion: any message or image engraved on any wine bottle or glass. Check out the ideas for holiday gifts and other special occasions.

1. How did you come up with the idea for Say It On Wine?

Everyone in Napa walks around with bottles of wine, purchased from cherished wineries, but unless they get shipped home, empty memories are tossed in the recycle bin. Taking note from something I learned working the NY wine market, I saw a need across Napa that was not being addressed. And Say It On Wine was born.

2. How does your engraving process work?

We use a laser engraving system, which allows us to engrave quickly and for a reasonable price. It also give us the ability to add images or logos along with any amount of text that can comfortably fit on the bottle.

3. What is the process for someone who wants to create a one of a kind engraving, with their own text and image?

We suggest customers contact us directly at info@sayitonwine com. Once we get an idea of what a customer is looking for, we will work with them to get the design just right. When they are 100% satisfied, we will charge them and get started right away on their order. Orders are generally delivered or shipped the same day the order is placed.

4. In addition to wine bottles, are there other items you engrave?

While we mainly work on 750ml wine bottles or smaller, we also work on and sell a variety of wine, beer, and specialty glassware. We have also engraved candles, vases, and decanters.

5. What is your advice to other entrepreneurs who are interested in building a business related to the wine industry?

There are a lot of different aspects to the wine business, so everyone from dreamers to investors can find something that they enjoy and are good at. I started in the wine business 15 years ago and had the chance to experience different aspects before deciding on what I wanted to do. Others may not have that liberty, but there are many options.

Thanks, Adam!

Meet Chuck of BurlapUSA, an Etsy Shop for Handmade Burlap and Lace

BurlapUSA is an Etsy shop which sells handmade items created in the USA from burlap and lace. Burlap is 100% natural and biodegradable, and the shop carries unique items for home décor, weddings, and bridal.

1. How did you first become interested in working with burlap?

I used to sell wholesale burlap fabric, but I saw the demand for handmade crafts from burlap fabric, so I started making the table runners using burlap fabric and lace.

2. Why do you think the combo of burlap and lace works well?

I knew it was a great combo after seeing the photos of burlap and lace runners at weddings.

3. Do you find that more people are looking for natural and biodegradable materials when planning weddings?

Yes I do, and I am glad I am a part of it.

4. What are some uses for burlap when it comes to home decor?

Curtains, aisle runners, rugs, coasters, place mats, and table runners are all popular.

5. What else would you like readers to know about your products and your Etsy shop?

They are all handmade out of 100% burlap fabric and top quality lace.

Thanks, Chuck!

Meet Alan and Elizabeth Hill, Makers of Wooden Rings

When Alan Hill married Elizabeth Hill, a metal allergy prevented her from wearing her beloved wedding ring for over a year. Inspired by Eizabeth's childhood home--a farm by the name of Lots-of-Oaks--Alan was inspired to create a ring out of wood for his wife. As time went on, Alan perfected his craft, and they soon found themselves being approached by people for rings of their own, and Northwood Rings was born.

Our interview below is with Elizabeth.

1. I was impressed at the variety of different looks of the rings on your site. What are some of the materials you use to create different designs for your rings?

The materials we use are constantly growing. We source most of the woods and stones from other artists that have small amounts left over, too little for any work they're doing. We're always taking in new materials to experiment with. Our common woods include Ebony, English oak, Walnut, Mahogany, Santos, and Indian rosewoods, just to name a few. We'll also be adding some really gorgeous patterned woods in early 2014. Some of my new favorites are Tulipwood, a rich red and pink striped wood, and a Mediterranean Olivewood.

Customers are also a big contributor to our materials list. They send sand, a shell they picked up on a beach, or even wood from their own property. The Birds Eye Birch that we display on our site was sent in from a customer in Quebec. It was such a beautiful piece of wood that we automatically added it to our site. Other materials we commonly use are crushed turquoise, crushed malachite (which has a beautiful rich green tone), and sands that we've picked up or collected along our own travels. We received a large paua shell from a New Zealand friend of ours, which creates striking inlays. We also offer gold and silver inlays to add an extra touch of beauty to our rings. We love the contrast between the smooth look of the metal and the grainy woods.

2. How do you work with customers at a distance to help them design their own unique rings?

Most of it comes from learning to listen. When designing wedding or engagement rings we'll start by getting to know the story. We'll ask where they met, their backgrounds, where they're heading, the best experiences they've had together, or what their relationship means to one another. We listen to what is important to them. For some, it's the experiences they've shared, and we'll base their rings off of those experiences. We've made rings from popular guitar woods and inlays for a couple that fell in love over music at acoustical concerts. For others, the symbolism found in the meanings of the wood and materials used are the most important part. We try to draw out their story and create from there. It's different from person to person, but I'll always tell my customers that they can't get it wrong. As long as the love and story is in the ring, it will never turn out badly.

3. How is the fit and feel of a wooden ring similar to--and different from--a metal ring, and what can customers do if their ring size changes and their wooden ring no longer fits?

The first reaction we always get when someone tries on one of our rings is that they can't believe how light they are. There's no weight like with a metal ring. The second thing they mention is the thinness and delicate appearance of the ring. Most people expect a wooden ring to be a bit chunky but the profile is similar to that of a metal ring and remains comfortable to wear, while the bentwood process ensures that it is durable and strong. The wooden rings also stay warm against your skin, even out in the cold, which is something I've always loved about them. The acrylic finish we apply makes them smooth to touch, which isn't very different from metal, but the grain and texture of the wood underneath creates a beautiful ring to look at.

Wooden rings do require a small amount of care. While our rings can be worn in water, keeping them away from harsh chemicals that can eat away at the coating, like chlorine or nail polish remover, and having to send them in for the occasional refinish adds a little bit more to the experience. A lot of our customers like the care they need to give to their rings. I've even had a customer mention that the care he needs to show his ring reminds him of the care he needs to put into his relationship with his bride to keep their marriage looking beautiful and like new. I loved that, and it added to the experience I have with my own ring, and with my husband.

As for size, we promise our customers rings that fit, and that includes over the lifetime of their wooden rings. Even though wooden rings can't be re-sized, it was important to me to create a wooden ring that could be worn for as long as a traditional metal ring could be. After all, most of these rings are going out as wedding rings and no one wants to choose a ring that won't last. We have a Care-For-Life Guarantee that ensures that if our customers are taking good care of their rings, we'll take care of them, too. The acrylic coating I mentioned keeps the wood sealed in and protected from water damage, chips, and other harm. When it wears down, we offer free refinishing so that the ring can be kept looking fantastic. As long as a customer is following our advice and sending their ring in for refinishing as that coating wears down, the ring will always look great. When they need a new size, we'll take back the old ring and replace it with one that fits at no charge.

To make sure we're not wasting a perfectly good ring, the old ring is then sanded down to the wood and given a fresh coat of finish. These rings are sold separately from our site to people who know they've had a past life and want to take them anyway.

4. Could you tell us a little bit about the bentwood process you use to make your rings?

The bentwood process is where our rings get their strength. When we make our rings, we use a long thin strip of wood going along with the grain. If you take a moment to picture a tree swaying in the breeze, bending with the wind, you'll get an idea of the bending that is possible. The grains that run up the tree allow for flexibility, and it's by manipulating this that we can create strong, lasting rings.

We take these long strips and steam them in a steam box. The heat and moisture adds more elasticity to the wood. Each variety takes a certain amount of time, and some woods have more flex than others. Once properly steamed, the strip is taken from the box and wrapped around a form. This part needs to be done quickly and carefully to make sure no cracking happens. The wood cools very quickly and will hold its new spiralled form.

When it's completely dry, we then take our spiral of wood and use an adhesive to glue the spiral into the right circumference for the ring we're creating. Each ring is made to order when our customer requests it, and nothing is done ahead of time. There is usually twelve inches or more in each ring and around five to seven layers of wood. The wood overlapping itself creates strength, sort of the way that staggered building blocks create strength, and the end result is a very durable, solid looking ring. From here the ring is shaped, sanded, and finished over a three day period of time and carefully inspected before being sent out.

5. For people who were unfamiliar with wooden rings before reading this interview, what do you most want to share with them about your rings?

I think most people hear of wooden rings and think that they will break easily or succumb to water damage within a few months. That's largely because wooden rings are nothing new and most have only experienced the cut-out variety that can be bought at the checkout counter for a few dollars. The difference between a bentwood wooden ring and one of these is not even comparable; they are very different rings. If anyone is interested in a wooden ring, they should talk to someone who has worn one, or give it a try for themselves. Even though they do require a slight amount of care, wooden rings can offer a beauty and uniqueness that can't be found in a traditional jewelry store. The whole idea of taking something that was once alive and had a story of its own and making it a part of your own story is the best part of wearing a wooden ring, in my opinion.

Thanks, Elizabeth!

Meet Mildred Stephens of Bashford Jewelry

Bashford Jewelry is a company dedicated to creating and selling beautiful one of a kind jewelry which is sourced and produced in ethical and environmentally responsible ways. Our interview below is with Mildred Stephens, CEO & Founder.

1. How did Bashford Jewelry get started, and what do you sell?

Through research, we became impassioned with the idea that responsibly-sourced jewelry could be an effective tool for social change in developing countries--and also create a better environment and help preserve it.

We offer eco-friendly, organic, and conflict free diamond engagement rings, men's wedding rings, women's wedding rings, and fashion and fine jewelry.

2. What processes does your company use to make sure that your diamonds are conflict-free?

Many of the world's diamonds are mined using practices that exploit workers, children, and communities. A million diamond diggers in Africa earn less than a dollar a day. Miners are dying in accidents, child labor is widespread, and corrupt leaders are depriving diamond mining communities of funds badly needed for economic development. Our beyond conflict free diamonds originate from Canada, Russia, and Botswana; the diamonds meet rigorous environmental standards, and producers are held strictly accountable to independent environmental monitoring agencies.

3. What is your company's mission?

Our mission is to make jewelry as beautiful and timeless as it can be, using ethical labor, eco-friendly materials, and environmentally responsible sources. We use only conflict free diamonds and research all our diamonds' origins, to protect and preserve the environment and improve livelihoods.

We work toward creating a greener diamond future, allowing us to fulfill our mission as the world leader in modern-day, ethically produced fine jewelry.

4. Would you tell us a little bit more about your commitment to ethical labor practices?

Our commitment to ethical labor practices is to ensure fair labor practices and safe, humane working conditions. All of our diamonds are mined in accordance with fair trade principles, providing local jobs and safe and progressive working conditions. Diamond miners receive fair wages, education, and skilled job training.

5. Do you design your own jewelry? If so, can a couple come in and design a ring with you?

Yes, we also specialize in affordable custom jewelry. We can create your memorable piece for you. The sky is the limit. Please send us your ideas or vision at create@bashfordjewelry.com.

Thanks, Mildred!

The Wedding Gift Registry for Magento

The more I learn about e-commerce, the more I learn about different tools that companies use online to connect with their customers. Once an entrepreneur chooses an e-commerce platform for selling his or her products online, there are a variety of specific extensions available for the platform which then allow the entrepreneur to further modify their e-commerce tools to meet the particular needs of his or her business.

Case in point, here's a very clever and useful extension, the Magento wedding registry. If you have an online storefront, wouldn't you like to allow customers to set up wedding registries on your site, thus opening the door to customers who will then buy items on the wish list of the bride- and groom-to-be?

If you're using a Magento platform for your online store, you can add this unique extension to create a user-friendly wedding registry for your customers. After the happy couple creates their registry, they can easily send invitations to their family and friends, informing them of the gift registry. The registry is also easy to share via Facebook and Twitter.

The wedding gift registry for Magento was created by Webtex Software, a web development firm founded in 2009. Learn more about this company by checking out their website, at http://www.webtexsoftware.com.

Darla Marie Designs: Guest Post from Sweetywedding.com

Below is a guest post from sweetywedding.com, an online shop which offers tailor made wedding dresses.

Darla Vietti of Darla Marie Designs successfully launched her line of DIY invitation suites, available at The Wedding Pantry as well as Darla's own website. After spending five years as a graphic designer for various companies throughout southern California, Darla discovered her passion for wedding stationery after designing for her own wedding.

When The Wedding Pantry opened and was seeking preferred vendors, Darla found the perfect opportunity to showcase a line of invitations that are "high quality and reasonably priced while maintaining a custom design aesthetic." Darla wanted to veer away from generic, cookie-cutter invitations and instead offer a DIY invitation line in a variety of designs and colors that have never been seen before.

Over time, Darla expanded her offerings with letterpress products, and she broadened her DIY invitation line to include place cards, table numbers, and other wedding day essentials. She is also working on creating a line of bridal clothing that will be "cute and quirky," not your typical bridal t-shirts.

We are big fans of Darla's custom design work!

Cake Walk: Guest Post from Sweetywedding.com

Below is a guest post from sweetywedding.com, an online retailer specializing in luxurious wedding dresses at affordable prices.

*

Do you enjoy flipping through the pages of Vogue or waiting in great anticipation of seeing your favorite designers share their collections at Fashion Week? Do you wish you could take your favorite runway looks and incorporate them into your wedding? Fashionistas take note: you can have a runway-worthy wedding regardless of your budget. Incorporating high fashion into your wedding does not have to be limited to your dress, nor does it require deep pockets. All you need is runway inspiration.

Recently, many wedding magazines and wedding blogs have focused on showcasing fabulous tablescapes that illustrate design, personality. and trends. We love a great tablescape, but that isn't the only design element in a wedding. The cake, florals, and stationery are also great platforms you can use to express yourself.

Megan Gray (of Ghost Academy and Honey and Poppies) and Erica O'Brien (of Erica O'Brien Cake Design) share a love of Oscar de la Renta's bold, colorful, and detail-oriented fashion. Together they wanted to translate de la Renta's fashion into a collection of wedding cakes (much like a designer has a collection of clothing) that incorporated florals also influenced by the designer.

Megan and Erica turned directly to Oscar de la Renta's 2010 collections for inspiration and pulled together thirty photos that they liked. From there, they narrowed the number of photos down to a group of ten that they really loved.

Erica used the prints, textures and architecture of the outfits from de la Renta's 2010 collections as the inspiration for each cake. Megan wanted to incorporate flowers into the cake as well, but did not want to bombard the cake with florals. Instead, she decided to create cake stands made out of fresh flowers so that the cakes would remain entirely edible.

Monica Majors of Papercut industries designed the wedding stationery, also drawing upon the colors and intricate details of the collection.

The final design element that Megan wanted to focus on was the bridal party dress. She sought dresses that looked expensive and fashionable, but were very affordable. The black lace dress she picked out was similar to one of do la Rental show stopping floor-length black lace dresses in his current couture line.

Megan and Erica's runway-inspired collection of cakes, florals, and stationery prove that high fashion is accessible to everyone if they just get a little creative.

Sweetywedding.com: Discount Wedding Dresses

When the owners of www.sweetywedding.com contacted me about doing an interview for this blog, their answers were, as the saying goes, short and sweet. They sell wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, and evening dresses for proms, dances, and other events. Their goal is to offer well-made dresses at reasonable prices.

I asked, "How are you able to offer high quality dresses for such low prices--what do you do to keep your costs down?" And their reply was, "Our expense in operating is much lower than a local retail store. There is no need to rent the store and have sales staff or an alterations department."

When I asked about their advice to buyers for making sure their online-ordered dresses fit properly, they suggested that buyers work with a tailor.

The company is based in China, and their website promises to help buyers find "unique style and fashion according to your shape" and to help you become "an elegant Greek goddess" or "beautiful princess."

Meet Laurie Cohen, Entrepreneur

Wife, mom, grandma, and entrepreneur, Laurie Cohen is the party-planning expert behind the Celebrationz4U family of websites: Birthday Party Kidz, Halloween Kidz, and For Bride and Baby. For craft ideas, party planning tips, deals on party supplies, recipes, and more, follow Laurie on Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest.

1. Would you describe the Celebrationz4U network of websites and what the sites offer to readers?

In 2007, taking the cue from some of my friends and reaching back to find something I knew and could share, I developed my first website, ForBrideAndBaby.com. Within the pages of the site you will find some of the most unique ideas for weddings and babies that the web has to offer. With the success of For Bride and Baby, I felt the desire to expand my business to include a websites where my current--and hopefully, new!--subscribers can find all the information necessary to throw fabulous children's birthday parties, and I started BirthdayPartyKidz.com. In 2010, after seven grandchildren, I decided to start HalloweenKidz.com as a place to find Halloween costumes to match any theme, as well as fun costumes and accessories for kids to use year-round while playing dress-up.

2. How did you first become interested in the party supplies / party planning business?

I have been an entrepreneur for over 30 years. Twenty years ago, I was the owner of the Northbrook, Illinois-based Kreative Kids and Parties, Inc. where I taught music and imagination classes to local children ages two through five. I also created a music and imagination class that I performed at children’s birthday parties. Kids and their moms still run up to me on the street and tell me I sang at their parties or at their children's parties!

From those parties came a personalized entertainment service selecting and contracting over fifty entertainers for parties. Several years later, I opened a complete party goods store providing the party goods and goody bags for children's parties--and favors and centerpieces for weddings, bar mitzvahs, and other parties. Now on its third owner, Kreative Parties is still a prominent business in the Northern Chicago suburbs.

3. What are some of your personal favorite ideas for party themes?

I have three daughters, so I'm partial to princess parties. Little girls love to dress up as princesses and invite their friends to court. The classic princesses like Cinderella are still popular. Princess party supplies are abundant and you'll find everything from tiaras to thank you notes for all the princess parties. Now that I have three grandsons, I get to see some boys birthday party themes like the Avengers, Batman, Spiderman, trucks, and tractors. I'm not sure that I have a favorite!

I also love Halloween parties. They can be made colorful and fun without being scary, and who doesn't like candy?

4. What do you think are the special touches that make a good party into a great party?

That's an easy one! Planning for every detail of the party is vital. I've created a birthday party checklist to eliminate forgetting anything; the checklist is available at BirthdayPartyKidz.com. There's also a bridal shower checklist and Planning a Baby Shower Ebook available on ForBrideandBaby.com.

The best parties have contingency plans and a complete schedule of activities from the time the guests arrive until you hand them a party favor. For kids' birthday parties, I always recommend getting some extra help. For less than you think, you can have your babysitter or a local college student or high schooler come and help with the kids and the serving. It's a lifesaver.

In planning parties with my own kids, we always started with a theme. It was often a decision based on many days of serious discussions between my daughters--who had minds of their own--and me, wanting to make them very happy.

5. Do you have advice for ways to find bargains and keep costs down when it comes to buying party supplies?

My number one tip is that you have an at-home birthday party. It's warm and fuzzy, and even with a professional clown or magician, it costs less than the local "in" place. At-home parties are also perfect for bridal showers, baby showers, and most any celebration. Once again, with the money you save in hosting your party at home, you can always spend just a little extra and hire some outside help.

Thanks, Laurie!
